Nuclear power is an important source of energy contributing to ensure energy security and reduce emissions ofgreenhouse gases on a global scale. In Vietnam, the policy on building Ninh Thuan nuclear power plant wasapproved by the National Assembly on November 25, 2009. On June 17, 2010, the Prime Minister has approved the Orientation for Planning Nuclear Power Development in Vietnam up to 2030. And in May 2011, Vietnam's Power Development Master Plan VII was approved, in which the first nuclear power plant will be put into operation for commercial power generation in 2020 and Vietnam will have 10.700 MW of nuclear poweraccounting for 10.1% of total generating capacity in 2030. Vietnam has signed a cooperation agreement withRussian Federation on building nuclear power plant Ninh Thuan 1 and with Japan for NPP Ninh Thuan 2. Study on site selection and investment project for these nuclear power plants has being conducted with the target tostart the construction of the first unit in 2014.
Recently in 2011, a severe accident occurred at Fukushima nuclear power plant (Japan) due to the earthquake and tsunami. The Accident, though not fatal, has spread radiation into the environment over a wide range andhad a negative impact on the policy of nuclear power development in some countries.
With the consent of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Vietnam (VCCI), the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM), the Management Board of Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Project and Vietnam Company of Advertising, Conference and Exhibition (VCCIEXPORT) will jointly organize the 5th International Exhibition and Seminar on Nuclear Power in Hanoi from 25 to 27 October 2012 at Hanoi Friendship Cultural Palace.
The purpose of the 5th International Exhibition and Seminar on Nuclear Power in Hanoi is to introduce to the public, the leaders and the National Assembly members the status of infrastructure preparation and implementation of Ninh Thuan nuclear power projects; capacity and experience of domestic and foreigncompanies on site evaluation for construction of nuclear power plants; design; manufacturing, construction and installation of a nuclear power plant; consultancy for establishing an investment project; evaluation of an investment project, preparation of bidding documents (EPC) and evaluation of EPC; selection of EPCcontractor, consulting for the evaluation of safety analysis report, consulting for the inspection of construction, installation, startup and operation of a nuclear power plant; and human resources training. In addition, the 5thInternational Exhibition and Seminar on Nuclear Power in Hanoi is also a forum to discuss the development of nuclear power in the world (trends, issues and safety technology) after the accident in Fukushima.
With the planning to develop 10.700 MW of nuclear power in 2030 and the first nuclear power plant will be put into commercial operation in 2020, Vietnam will have to dig foundation to construct one unit each year since 2014. This is a major program of nuclear power development. So, the Organizing Committee of the 5thInternational Exhibition and Seminar on Nuclear Power in Hanoi expects the nuclear power design companies, fabrication companies, construction and installation companies of nuclear power countries such as Russia, Japan, the United States, France, Korea, China, India, Canada to participate in the Exhibition and introducetheir capacity and experience in the provision of nuclear power plants to other countries around the world, from that Vietnam can select these companies as the partner of Vietnam in nuclear power projects. The domestic companies of construction and installation, equipment manufacturing, and supplies will participate in the Exhibition to introduce the capacity and exchange with foreign partners to improve the localization to participatein nuclear power projects. In addition, the Organizing Committee also expects the participation of the consulting companies in the field of nuclear power in the world to introduce their capacity and experience as a potentialconsulting partner for nuclear power projects of Vietnam. Within the framework of Vietnam technicalcooperation projects with the IAEA on nuclear power development, especially on infrastructure construction, the Organizing Committee will also invite experts from the IAEA to participate in several related seminars.
